At first, a secret may feel like a form of protection, but ultimately the anxiety, fear,  shame , regret and guilt take a toll on our body and mind. Secrets come in many forms such as trauma, unhealthy behavior or even negative beliefs about oneself. It’s easy to internalize them without realizing how harmful they are to our health. The emotional, mental, physical and spiritual impact of secrets are well documented. In fact,  research suggests keeping secrets can significantly boost stress hormones , impact blood pressure, inhibit sleep, contribute to mental health and substance use disorders and even increase chronic pain. Alcoholism: A Family Disease – How Alcohol Addiction Affects Families

Image
Originally posted on Eleanor Health Alcohol use disorder (AUD), commonly called alcoholism, is often called a “family disease” because it impacts more people than just the individual with alcohol addiction. Addiction happens in all types of families, and its emotional side effects are felt by spouses, children, and other loved ones. Their lives, behaviors, and attitudes can change forever as a result of the disease. They can even experience anxiety, depression, and shame as a result of alcohol addiction. Living in a home with AUD can lead to disruptive behavior, tension, and strained relationships—all of which can cause significant stress on the family unit. ALCOHOL ADDICTION AND RELATIONSHIPS It’s common for many couples to drink together. According to the University of Buffalo’s Clinical and Research Institute on Addiction , both husbands and wives regularly drink alcohol in roughly half of all couples. Moderate alcohol use may have few consequences, but heavier drinking that le...

Inner peace is possible if we use time purposefully to practice gratitude.  Mindfully focusing on being grateful helps renew hope and shift perspective, which contribute to healing and calming during times of uncertainty. When we practice gratitude, it can give us the perspective we need to remember that our challenges are only temporary– even during an odd, unprecedented time of social distancing. There is always something to be grateful for. Besides, social distancing doesn’t have to mean disconnection. There are so many ways to stay connected. Whether you’re in recovery fr...

February 17th, my sobriety date. This year marks 11 years in recovery. As I sit in my home office, a France cycling guide on my lap, I focus on the photo Chantal gave me last year to celebrate my 10-year anniversary while we were cycling in Myanmar. I love both the photo and the frame. Chantal and I are in Chile, wearing French cycling jerseys, a volcano in the background and a group of fellow adventurers just out of view. We are fit, smiling and doing what I love most: exploring. That’s the gift of recovery in my life, right there in that photo with a cycling chain that holds together my 24 hour, 1 year, 5 year and 10 year AA coins. When I left my career as a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, I had no idea that moving a...
